TZP Group Names Veteran Data Scientist Tamar Shapiro to Newly Created Role, Partner of Data & Analytics

March 1, 2022

TZP Group LLC announced that Tamar Shapiro has joined the firm as Partner of Data & Analytics within its Portfolio Operations Group. This newly created position places Shapiro to work with TZP's portfolio companies to help them use data and analytics to drive engagement, sales, and profitability.

Shapiro previously led analytics at Instagram (part of Meta Platforms), overseeing a team exceeding 350 data scientists and engineers. Her team developed modeling, experimentation, and advanced analytics strategies serving Instagram's over 1 billion daily users.

Before Instagram, Shapiro held the role of Head of Analytics at Foursquare, where she managed product analytics teams and built a B2B data product leveraging location information. She also spent more than a decade at American Express as Head of Analytics for the Digital division, leading global data science and product analytics teams supporting the company's web and mobile platforms. Her career began as an actuary at Deloitte Consulting.

Sam Katz, Managing Partner of TZP Group, noted that "data science is mission-critical for companies seeking to deepen their connections with customers." He highlighted Shapiro's unique standing in lower middle-market private equity, emphasizing her role in establishing strong analytics foundations.

Shapiro stated that lower middle-market companies possess substantial data but often lack resources to monetize or leverage it. She selected TZP for its positioning, adherence to core values, and rigorous process-oriented approach.

Shapiro holds a Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Biometry from Cornell University and a Master of Science in Engineering from Columbia University. She actively mentors through Built By Girls, Minds Matter, and Women Unlimited, and previously co-chaired the Analytics Collective.
